Abundance

Join us for this series of Daily Reflections on "Abundance."
The English word abundance is derived from the Latin "abundare" which means "overflow, or run over." The core root means “rise in a wave.”
As a boy growing up on the Gulf of Mexico, our little group of friends would run to the beach for a swim, sometimes two or three times a day. We'd dash over the hot quartz crystal dunes into the cool surf. Then, we would jump head-on into the waves.
Once we'd swum past the sand bar, we'd float on our backs and swim to our hearts' content. We even got used to opening our eyes underwater to explore the deep, even though the salt initially stung. Then, we would catch a huge wave and ride back onto the beach.
I recall the feeling of riding the waves back into the shallow water. Surfers must feel this too. It's a feeling of being carried by something bigger than ourselves - something more powerful than we - filled with energy.
The Latin words for abundance that come from the word "wave" make sense to me. When we enjoy abundance, it's like a wave of blessings that carries us.
Inquiry: Does an abundance of something carry you now in any way?
Dear God,
As I ride the wave of abundance, I feel the energy of the universe holding and propelling me. I pray to relax into that wave and enjoy its energy. I pray to trust that you’re taking me to shore. Amen.
