The Future
September 8, 2023
Though things can seem grim when we project into the future, there is hope if we look closer.
Drew Gilpin Faust, born in 1947, wrote to President Eisenhower after she discovered, to her disbelief, that black children were not allowed in her Virginia public school. Drew wrote to President Eisenhower, “Dear Mr. President, I am nine years old and white, but I have many feelings about segregation.” The letter went on to call for equal rights to education for black children.
Drew was from a family who treated the civil war as if the South had won, so she was not raised in a “liberal" household. Unlike the family in which she was raised, Drew was a new breed of human beings emerging who were shocked at the purposeful oppression of people, and decided to do something about it. She made a life out of questioning how things were, and when she saw inequality, she actively opposed it. From 2007 until 2018, Drew was president of Harvard University.
In her new book, Necessary Trouble, Drew Faust speaks with a humble heart about the life she spent making trouble for those who oppress, hate and kill those over whom they want to control.
Though Drew is outstanding in her own right, thousands of people understand that oppression and other crimes against humanity happen all over the globe. Their consciousness trickles down to those whose lives they touch. They embody hope for the future.
More and more people are awakening to the need for cooperation instead of factionalism. Even though there seems to be a rise in factionalism, a steady stream of those who, like Drew Faust and many others, continues to flow, and with their leadership, we see what had been hidden. Hopefully enough of us, a critical mass of us, will live out the idea that peaceful coexistence is essential for the survival of our species and the earth. This makes for a bright future.
Inquiry: What are three reasons you have hope for the future?
Dear God,
I thank those who step out of their old ideas and comfort zones to learn new things and explore consciousness. I pray for these brave souls to lead the way.
Amen.
