Spiritual Road Tests

For students of the Spirituality of the Enneagram, a spiritual road test answers the following profound question: How well are we applying the Enneagram's wisdom? Each of us has a personal application of the Enneagram because we each have a unique spiritual and egoic nature. The Enneagram informs both by providing pathways to wholeness, consciousness and healing. How well we apply the wisdom informs our spiritual progression.

Yet another question measures the results of our spiritual road tests: "How well are you loving?" This includes the love of all life as well as ourselves. The universal truths of the Enneagram reflect the spiritual purpose of increasing our capacity to love.

I can know all the passions, virtues and subtypes. I can recite all the Holy Ideas and Essential Aspects. I can explain the levels of consciousness and the inner flow of the arrows. Yet, I have not applied this wisdom if I have not increased my capacity to love which increases my capacity to grow.

The Enneagram can become an egoic trap that tricks us into a spiritual by-pass if we forget the integral aspect of its application. The Enneagram is like all spiritual structures; it is a set of mental concepts. It cannot come alive without applying its wisdom to our bodies, minds and hearts.

My being frustrated and unsettled are signals that I am not applying a beautiful and essential truth of the Enneagram. If I am lucky enough to realize my frustration, the Enneagram design comes into my mind's eye. Then I see myself going against my arrow to my soul point. It's like I can exhale from my belly. I am home because my heart tells me I am. The relief is immediate. My soul takes over and my ego relinquishes. This is just one example of an application.
