Reflection

June 30, 2023

Reflection is a time for looking at something or looking back at something and thinking about it. We may reflect on anything - a person, event, work of art, an occurrence, book, lecture, concert, play, sports event, historical event, a fantasy, a physical sensation, an encounter, concept, an emotional reaction, a movie or anything we humans can experience. We reflect upon the subject because of the positive feelings it evokes or the negative feelings it brings. Sometimes we reflect because we are curious about the experience and want to think more about it.

But reflection is more than merely thinking about something; it considers the subject from different perspectives. We may reflect on the subject through the eyes of our inner critic, soul child, passion, desires or fears. We may reflect in light of our soul or false self. We may reflect in light of our spiritual concepts. These engaging exercises give many insights and perspectives we would never have had without reflection.

When the intention of our reflection is to be part of our spiritual practice, our aim is to discern the divine meaning that arises within it. The steps to spiritual reflection are simple: First, we allow ourselves to think about the subject in the most important lights on our minds that day. Then we let these thoughts run their course. Next, we drop from our minds into our hearts, bringing us to the level of our heart’s feelings. Finally, from our heart, we allow the subject of our reflection to speak to us in impressions, emotions, insights, feeling states and sometimes all of these at once. When we put words to the heart’s arisings, we know the divine meaning of our reflection.

Inquiry: What is your experience of reflection versus spiritual reflection?

Dear God,

Your messages and meaning are everywhere, yet I see them only when I am aware. But when I sit and reflect, intending to feel my reflection in my heart, there you are with your messages. I pray to have these times in everything, everyday. Amen.
