The Power of Healing

March 25, 2024

A ground-breaking book on healing is The Healing Light (1947) by Agnes Sanford. At the time of publication, many people considered her ideas to be “New Age.” The history of  healing has proven Sanford’s ideas to be on the right track. What did Sanford say about healing?

Having experienced a near-death experience, Agnes Sanford learned that the healing journey begins with surrendering our life to God. This includes our future and even the outcome of the problem. Then, we visualize the healing light entering our body. One’s faith empowers this visualization. In the Christian tradition from which she came, (her parents were missionaries to China), visualizations included imagining the power of Christ’s presence. In other traditions, the light emanates from the deity they identify with.

The next step, according to Sanford, is regular prayer and meditation. These practices ground our minds, bodies, and hearts in the spirit. The meditative condition lasts in between the times of prayer and meditation. Our beings are penetrated by the healing light that gives us comfort, warmth, and strength beyond ourselves. This relieves the tension and fear that grips us in any kind of trouble. We put ourselves in a shell to deal with these fears, but that shell walls us off. Stepping out into the light, we trust the support of the Spirit.

These ideas are accepted and practiced by healers in every tradition. A new life force enters us as our mind’s visualizations are paired with our heart’s loving energy and the physical container of our soul, our body.

Inquiry: Has the light surrounded you? Has the light ever entered your body and heart?

Dear God,

I pray for the light. And for all that blocks that energy, I pray be taken away.

Amen.
