Living in Essence
March 8, 2024
Many say, “I hear about Essence, but what is it really?” In answering this question, it’s important to first know what essence is NOT. Our essence is not our appearance, social standing, education, gender, financial status, family background, personal history, ethnicity, accent, sexuality, accomplishments, mistakes, or personality.
Just try describing yourself without using these categories. In truth, it’s next to impossible because we conceptualize ourselves and others in these terms. Deep down, however, we know that we are not our money, house, possessions, failures, successes, roles, talents, weaknesses, or personalities, etc. Despite the importance of these things, in our hearts, we know we are more than any of these. So, to identify our essence, many of us turn inwardly to our depths.
We find that at our core is our divine purpose and all our qualities that fulfill that purpose. So, most simply put, our essence is the “Divine Why” of our lives and our expression of it. Our essence holds the accumulated wisdom of our lifetime and the things we need to learn in this life to progress spiritually. As our spiritual identity, our essence is not our ego or its inner critic, instead, it is our consciousness of the One True Source of All Being and our relationship with it.
Inquiry: Can you describe your essence?
Dear God,
As I go down into the deep of my own being, I break through the outer layers of my identity and see myself as an expression of you. I pray for your Holy Spirit to uphold me and fill me with the awareness of your love. I pray to grow.
Amen
