Connection

We may be connected to ourselves, to others, and to the Divine Essence, yet to be whole, we must also be conscious of our personal essence. This is an intentional action. In yesterday's Daily Reflection, I told the story of recently being overwhelmed by dark feelings that blocked my awareness of my essence. It was seemingly impossible to move out of this mindset, which led to despair. My ego mind had gotten control over me, so it was only through intentional prayer that I regained consciousness of my essence. Then, gratefully, the eyes of my soul took over, and sooner than expected the way to proceed was visible.

The spiritual life calls us to become conscious of everything we do daily. However, that is a tricky proposition because our egos rely on their strategies rather than primarily on the soul's presence, faith, and trust. We know our egos are essential in moving us through the world, but in becoming conscious, we resist its wholesale control of our being. The ego's thoughts can lead us on a dark collision course. After years of becoming aware, our ego realizes that we recognize its control over us and refuse to be led down that road. So, the ego learns to cooperate with the soul as it leads us.

The amalgamation of ego and soul is a lifetime process. It cannot be done in a vacuum. We rely on our brothers and sisters and our relationship with the One True Source of All Being.

The container for this process is our spiritual practice. The foundation of all spiritual practice is prayer and meditation.

Inquiry: As you regain consciousness of your essence, what empowers it?

Dear God,

You made the way clear, and I am so grateful. There is no way that I could have seen, from the eyes of my ego, a viable way to proceed. But the eyes of my soul literally showed me your way to go. I humbly pray for the capacity to re-embody my essence in all situations. Amen.
