Going Deeper Part 4

Sometimes, we think we cannot go any deeper. We have stretched our minds, imaginations, and capacities and consumed all the spiritual information we can. There is no more we can understand or comprehend.

Then something happens to throw us off base. We misplace something important, our energy depletes, our plans run aground, we get trapped in the same thoughts about someone or something, and they drag us down. These make their way into our lives for a reason, but regardless of how much we study and learn, we do not have the spiritual capacity we thought we had. What can we do? This is not the time to get depressed, to get thrown off, or to let the ego overtake us. Instead, it is the opportunity to go deeper.

Though we may be overloaded with spiritual information, though we may be on a spiritual mountaintop, we still can’t surmount our current obstacles unless we come aside from our routine.

This is when we must detach from regular routines to process the spiritual meaning of our dilemma and to embody the spiritual information we have learned. Only then can we apply our spiritual wisdom. Spiritual wisdom that is non-applied, is simply knowledge, and knowledge regardless of how sacred, if it is unvisited, and unused, can fade away.

Many challenges call for a break in our usual activities because routine fosters the same ways we have always used to perceive our dilemmas and reality. At times of challenge, it’s very productive to come aside from the routine and reconnect to our depths.

This can be done by not even leaving our current location. By altering our consciousness through meditation, writing, or any spiritual practice that relieves us of sameness, we tend to see things from a different perspective.

Spiritual practice: Plan a private retreat to practice coming aside. Make an intention that you will see your current dilemma in another light.

Self-inquiry: How might God use our backlog of spiritual information?

Dear God,

As I come aside, I pray for deeper intimacy with you. Amen
