Divine Order Part 3
Strange and painful things can happen at any time. Something goes wrong, someone hurts us, or they are disappointed in us, there’s a great loss, we are victims of circumstances beyond our control — these are examples of big things that derail us. But there are also countless small things that do the same, like when someone doesn’t do what they promised, when there’s a fender bender, when we say the wrong thing, when we lose important papers, or even when we are running really late for an important event.
When such things happen large and small, our ego steps right in. After all, we hired it to help us when the environment doesn’t ’hold’ us as we need it to. Our reactions to these upsets are frequently dictated by our ego type.
Type One’s first reaction is to feel defective and wrong — then they harshly criticize themselves and others.
Type Twos feel humiliated that things didn’t go as they wanted — they then restore their bruised pride by manipulating people to honor them.
Type Threes feel helpless and hopeless — then they become separate “Doers” who fix it themselves.
Type Fours feel abandoned, alone, and unseen. They lament their abandonment and take on the role of “victim of circumstance.”
Type Fives feel isolated, empty, and cut off from others, so they stay in their self-made cave and further detach.
Type Sixes feel insecure and at risk, so they become security addicts and people pleasers.
Type Sevens feel lost and don’t know where or how to go — so they go into planning mode and remain in constant motion and consumption.
Type Eights react by feeling guilty, so in vengeance, they intimidate others in order to transcend their guilt.
Type Nines feel unlovable and inferior — as a result they put themselves down so others will tell them they are loved.
Though these ego strategies seem promising, and sometimes may work, in reality, none of them ensures the feeling of being authentically held during our crisis. When in a crisis, many of us know the power of the ego to cause us to react in one of the nine ways described above. So, to preempt it, we may say the following life-changing affirmation: “I claim Divine Order.” If we believe these words, they dispel the ego’s perception of reality and place us in a higher level of consciousness. These words affirm and align us with the underlying order beneath all circumstances even those which appear to be out of order.
Once we claim the truth, we no longer need to react with our ego. Instead, from our higher self, the affirmation opens up spaciousness to trust the underlying Divine Order. This helps us to move forward in a higher plane of consciousness.
Spiritual practice: What may be your dilemma today? How are you handling it? If you feel unsettled or ill at ease about it, your ego’s strategy may be at work. If you wish to try another way, claim Divine Order. See if spaciousness comes into the situation. If so, are you able to move forward with trust?
Self-inquiry: What are some reasons why you would not be able to trust divine order?
Dear God,
I claim Divine order. Amen
