Talking to the Dead

April 5, 2024

Welcome to this series of Daily Reflections on “Talking to the Dead.”

Most of us have lost a father, mother, sister, or brother. Maybe it is a child, aunt, uncle, cousin, or grandparent. Perhaps it is a friend. We don’t like to think of these dear souls as dead. We avoid the word “dead” when talking about these dear ones. Death is too harsh of a word to describe someone so meaningful to us. Death is so final. Death is so sad. Death is the opposite of the life they brought to us!

But as people who live the spiritual life, we do not consider those no longer living to be dead. We know our consciousness is not dependent on our physical body and that when that body ceases to exist, our consciousness continues in some form. Such is a central premise of all the world’s religions: we are souls before birth, during life, and after death.

We do not give much credence to those who say they talk with the dead. It sounds like hocus pocus or weird seances. But if consciousness does continue, is it hocus pocus or strange for us to connect to the souls of our lost ones?

This week, we will reflect on the connection to our lost dear ones. Also, we will reflect upon the spiritual work we can do with them even though they are no longer here in a body.

Inquiry: What may prevent you from thinking of your lost loved ones as still alive in another dimension?

Dear God,

As I explore these thoughts and feelings, I ask for the guidance of your Holy Spirit.

Amen.
