It takes energy to love and more energy to love the unlovable. Some people are not easy for us to love. There are many reasons for this: they could remind us of someone who traumatized us, they may traumatize us, or the person is aggressive or uncaring. They may have hurt or used us. Whatever the reason, we do not easily love the person. We may not even want to love them.

But if we want spiritual growth, we must love everyone as ourselves. That is a tall order, and to even get close to that goal, it’s crucial to try to love those who we find unlovable. Our hearts go out easily to the lovable ones in our lives, but to love the unlovable, we must draw on other energy — divine energy.

How do we tap into divine energy? We begin by making a conscious decision to leave the ego level and live from our soul level. We tap into the soul by shifting to our depths. It’s like exhaling deeply while surrendering all thoughts into the divine mind. Tension leaves the body, and anxious thoughts dissipate. Spaciousness — room from the absolute mind appears. In that space, we can now see the unlovable person as a child — a child whose soul we now perceive.

Whether they love us back or not is not our concern. What their ego thinks of us is not essential, and what our ego thinks of them is not necessary. We act and speak as the unfolding Divine plan guides us.

We may fail, especially if we are drained, repulsed, fearful or too angry. We may make some progress and then relapse. But to continue the intention to love even the unlovable is our soul’s prayer.

Spiritual practice: Practice shifting into your soul when you are around someone you find challenging to love. Notice whether or not you can perceive their soul.

Self-inquiry: Why would you want to love the unlovable?

Dear God, I give you thanks and praise for the Divine energy to love those I cannot love all by myself. Amen
