Love at First Sight

November 20, 2023

When you do something for the first time and fall in love with it, chances are it is an aspect of your soul. Yes, the activity you engaged in resonated in your depths and made you more expansive, full and happy.

The activity you’re doing pierces the crust between the ego and soul and immediately connects us to our true nature. When the barrier between the ego and soul is broken, the soul transports us to what is known in Judaism, Islam and Christianity as “The Kingdom of Heaven and Earth” or “The Kingdom of God.” The kingdom is the state of divine order, peace and fulfillment of God’s purpose. In “the kingdom,” our soul bursts forth. We do not want to leave such spaces because we have the feeling of having come home.

I recall walking through the redwood trees in California for the first time. The chattering visitors went silent as we entered Muir Woods. The groves of towering creations took our breath away. Their majesty dwarfed us as we walked deeper and deeper into this forest of giants. Many of these trees were living and growing at the time of Christ. Amongst these trees, I was on hallowed ground, like when walking through Notre Dame Cathedral, the Grand Canyon, Westminster Abbey or the beautiful little church in my hometown. The feeling of being enveloped. And it makes me want to stay.

How did this activity transport me to the kingdom, and what did it tell me about my soul? What qualities of my soul did I reconnect with by walking through the redwood trees? These questions can be answered only through reflection and entering the inner sacred space where I listen to the still, small voice.

Our souls are searching for places to fully express themselves. When we come upon such a place, something tugs on us and bids us to linger.

Inquiry: What activity takes your breath away?

Dear God,

Thank you for the majesty and wonder of your beautiful creation and the senses it arouses in me. Please help me remember that I am a part of this creation. I pray that we can protect all our hallowed grounds. Amen.
