Ego Type Ones learn spiritually by seeing themselves as works in progress instead of as being right and perfect. They switch to seeing themselves as works in progress by returning to their essence of hopefulness and optimism. Unchecked Ego Type Ones cannot learn spiritually if they think they are already perfect. When we monitor others to ensure they are doing the right thing, it is difficult to focus on our own liabilities. So, the best thing to happen is to be proven indisputably wrong. If we do not deny it, we become open to learning spiritually — because we know we do not have all the right answers. Consciousness now has its foot in the door of our lives.

Ego Type Sevens learn spiritually by prizing wisdom more than comfort. The downward spiral of disintegration is broken once they put spiritual wisdom above their fear of pain and deprivation. No longer distracted by their search for current and future pleasures, Sevens are in a position to learn spiritually; spiritual wisdom informs Sevens of their spiritual work, which reveals the Divine Plan for their spiritual work. We cannot learn spiritually when we live in the future, always planning for the next thing that delights and distracts us. But when we center ourselves in the quiet of the present moment, we hear the spirit within us.

Ego Type Fives learn spiritually by coming out of their virtual cave. Their detachment from others and continuous absorption of information creates dependence on that information, which separates them from others. Insulated from the world by their desire for uninterrupted time, they gather and store all they think they need. They fear that their inner sanctum, time, and information will be invaded or stolen. It is lucky for them when their cave becomes a prison. If they do not disintegrate into a world of unrealistic fantasy, they are able to become conscious. We are ready for spiritual learning when we dispense with our attachments that imprison our minds.

Inquiry: Which of the above applies to you?

Dear God,

As I navigate the Enneagram, I see how each point applies to me. I pray for the courage to apply the truths I see. Amen
