The ego is a part of our entire being; therefore, though it is a mental structure, it is part of our wholeness and complete soul. Some of our most tremendous suffering is caused by the ego, which wants to override our higher self to move us through the world in the way it seems is best for us. However, the ego's way is not the best because, as a mental structure, it cannot achieve the peace and soul satisfaction we seek.

We are frustrated when we don't achieve the peace our ego strategizes for us to gain. It is like having a milkshake, but after we drink it, we are unsatisfied. Sometimes, some of us live our entire lives trying to achieve satisfaction through our ego's methods.

But we also suffer from the means our ego uses to satisfy us. Because it is trapped in its own reality, the ego doesn't always understand the repercussions of exerting its will and choices. And frequently, the ego's will clashes with the real truth.

Sometimes, when the ego cannot accept reality, it suffers interminably. For example, if it cannot accept a loss, it must still deal with the absence of what or who it lost. If it was wronged and couldn't forgive the perpetrator, it suffers because the pain is not resolved. If its love is rejected, it suffers.

The ego employs its fixation, passions, and avoidances to deal with its suffering. Until it accepts reality, it remains in great pain in the form of repression, depression, rage, vengeance, and many other forms.

Fortunately, the soul is always there. It takes the suffering of our ego and the wisdom learned from that suffering and amalgamates it into itself. When this occurs, we can go to a higher form of consciousness. We are no longer blind to our ego and its methods, at least in that particular situation. The ego must serve the soul for the soul to amalgamate its wisdom. At the higher level of consciousness, we transcend the ego's methods, and our soul qualities take the lead in dealing with life. These qualities give peace and satisfaction — they are not mental structures but soul structures, infinitely connected to the One True Source of All Being.

Inquiry: What is your favorite soul quality? How has it brought you to more peace and satisfaction?

Bless me as I do the work of my soul. Amen
